Types and application of carbon refractory raw materials

Carbonaceous materials have many advantages, which are widely used in iron and steel, nonferrous metals and other industries. Carbon has stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, good conductivity, low coefficient of linear expansion, strong thermal shock resistance, not wetted by most molten metals, good wear resistance and corrosion resistance. It is used in refractories with high strength but easy to be oxidized. Carbon containing refractories are typical neutral refractories, which can be made into baked carbon bricks, self baking carbon bricks, silicon carbide bricks and amorphous carbon ramming materials.

Carbon materials in refractory materials are common graphite, carbon materials, silicon carbide and so on.

1. Graphite

Graphite is the main raw material and important component of graphite products (such as graphite clay products, graphite silicon carbide products). China has the largest reserves of natural graphite in the world. According to the crystalline form of graphite, it can be divided into flake graphite, block graphite and amorphous graphite.

2. Carbon materials

The carbon materials used in refractories include coke, anthracite, etc. Carbon materials are widely used in ironmaking, steelmaking and nonferrous smelting.

2.1 coke

Coke is a kind of amorphous carbon. In industrial production, bituminous coal or some substances with high carbon content (such as petroleum pitch, residual oil, coal tar pitch, etc.) are used to insulate air from heating to make it coking in industrial production. The product of coal coking is metallurgical coke, the product of petroleum pitch or residual oil pitch is petroleum coke, and the product of coal tar pitch coking is pitch coke. Metallurgical coke is mainly used as fuel of blast furnace and reducing agent of iron making, and can also be used to produce various carbon blocks and carbon electrodes; the other two kinds of coke are relatively less used.

2.2 anthracite

Anthracite is an important raw material for producing carbon brick, silicon carbide, carbon electrode, electrode paste and bottom paste.

3. Silicon carbide

Silicon carbide is also a very common refractory material in refractories, which has a wide range of applications. It can be used in refractory bricks and amorphous materials to effectively improve product quality and service life.
